How to become a martial arts choreographer?

I’m 17 years old, and I have a great passion for martial arts. I recently turned a 1st Dan in Taekwondo. How do I become a martial arts choreographer? Thank you!

1) In addition to broadening your martial arts knowledge, you must train in stunt work and stage fighting. You have to understand how people move for the movies, and how this interacts with camera angles and other aspects of stunt work.

2) You could work for years as a production assistant, and try to get people to recognize the excellence of your work, and work your way up. Like the vast majority of people, that will probably go nowhere. Or, you could develop a rep for excellence in practicing and coaching martial art, while networking with film people, get professionally produced demo reels, and have them call you.

Keep in mind that people in show business always act interested and talk about how they’re “thinking about” or “interested in” working with you… but often do not follow up. You really have to get to know the vibe of the industry. Almost any prominent martial artist can say that they’ve “been approached” to do film work, but few actually do it.

There are far more people in the world who want to do fight choreography, than there is work for them to do, so the vast majority of people who go for this will go nowhere. Almost no one does it “full-time”, either, and when they do, it’s generally short-term contracts. It will never be your primary source of income.

Tan Dun straddles the very different worlds of concert music and film scores, winning admirers in both. He’s perhaps best known for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which shares with Hero a visual poetry that transcends the sword-filled action film genre. In Crouching Tiger, Tan Dun’s music was often striking. In Hero he often lapses into repetition and cliché, a failing compensated f…

Director Zhang Yimou brings the sumptuous visual style of his previous films (Raise the Red Lantern, Shanghai Triad) to the high-kicking kung fu genre. A nameless warrior (Jet Li, Romeo Must Die, Once Upon a Time in China) arrives at an emperor’s palace with three weapons, each belonging to a famous assassin who had sworn to kill the emperor. As the nameless man spins out his story–and the empero…
